Getting Started with Common Core
An Introduction to the Common Core State Standards Initiative
for District Administrators, Principals, and Teachers
This one-day overview training provides valuable information, resources, and strategies to support implementation of the Common Core State Standards in schools and districts. Expert presenters will provide an overview of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, discuss implications for English Learners, share up-to-date information about the SMARTER Balanced assessments and present strategies for integrating history-social science, science and the visual and performing arts.

Getting Started with Common Core
An Introduction to the Common Core State Standards Initiative
for Charter Schools
This one-day training is designed to provide charter school staff with an introduction to the Common Core State Standards Initiative. Expert presenters will provide an overview of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects; the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics; and information about the SMARTER Balanced assessment system that will begin in 2014-15. Attention will be given to understanding the purpose and objectives for implementing the Common Core State Standards in charter schools and beginning steps to move the initiative forward at school sites. It's not too early to get started!

PBL 101: An Introduction to Project Based Learning for the 21st Century
The Los Angeles County Office of Education presents a three-day workshop for K-12 educators to learn how to utilize Project Based Learning as an instructional approach to implement Common Core State Standards and prepare students for college, career and citizenship in the 21st century. In Project Based Learning, students go through an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Rigorous projects help students learn key academic content and practice 21st Century Skills (such as collaboration, communication, and critical thinking).
Yvonne Contreras, Ed.D. and Michelle Herczog, Ed.D. from the Division of Curriculum and Instructional Services at the Los Angeles County Office of Education will guide participants in utilizing Buck Institute for Education materials to design, manage and assess standards-focused projects and the student work that is generated by them. Classroom teachers, curriculum specialists, and school administrators are encouraged to apply in teams of three to four.
